2016 Year in Review: Golf Channel Spotlights Myrtle Beach Buddy Trip

December 21, 2016

The Cruds, a Durham, N.C. based golf group, started taking twice annual Myrtle Beach golf trips in 1967, making this fall the occasion of the group’s 100th sojourn to the Grand Strand. The story was too good for Golf Channel to pass up, and the network’s travel guru, Matt Ginella, came to the area to chronicle the group’s many adventures over the years.

The piece captured the essence of a Myrtle Beach golf trip through the eyes of a group that may have made more treks to the area than any other, led by Russell Barringer.

Barringer secures tee times, makes dinner reservations, buy shirts and guarantees that The Cruds train runs on time. For the approximately 20 active guys in the group, it’s all about a good time and sharing stories that now nearly span a lifetime.

While Golf Channel shot an 8-minute feature on the group, the reality is The Cruds aren’t much different than thousands of others that take a Myrtle Beach golf trip each year. Some are close friends that see each throughout the year, others largely become reacquainted on the trips, but either way, a Myrtle Beach golf vacation is the common bond.

A buddies trip offers a chance to get away from the stress of daily life and enjoy a little time away on the golf course, and it was great to see Myrtle Beach’s most prolific group enjoy national exposure.
