​The Calabash course has earned a 4-star rating from Golf Digest, so it’s difficult to call it underrated, but it does escape notice. Crow Creek isn’t ranked among America’s top 100 public courses, but it’s a layout that makes group leaders look smart.

As you begin planning your 2017 golf trip, here is what you need to know about Crow Creek:

• Bring the driver with you. Crow Creek has five sets of tees, ranging from 5.097 to 7.101 yards and there is ample room to swing the big stick on the tee. The white tees are 6.099, giving mid to high handicappers opportunities for short approaches without the risk of too much trouble off the tee.
• Don’t confuse wide fairways and moderate length with a lack of challenge, because Crow Creek is a second shot golf course. The L93 bentgrass greens have plenty of contour and are flanked by bunkers. While the tee shot may not induce anxiety, many a second shot will, so spend time on the range getting your irons dialed in.
• What’s the hole you will tell your buddies when you get home? The par 3 8th plays 168 yards from the blue tees and 143 from the whites, and it would look good on a postcard. A large pond, complete with cypress trees growing in the middle, fronts the green and a bunker on the right frames the hole. It’s beautiful and daunting.
• Architect Rick Robbins delivered a quality design and it’s complemented by a staff that keeps Crow Creek in near impeccable condition throughout the year.
