September 25, 2015

8 Myrtle Beach Area Courses Celebrate 25 Years in 2015!As a matter of fact, the courses celebrating their silver anniversary represent, arguably, the best class in Myrtle Beach history.

Six of the eight layouts have earned at least four stars from Golf Digest and one was named best new

course in America by Golf Digest and Golf Magazine upon its opening.

Without further ado, a look at the star-studded Myrtle Beach golf class of 1990:

  • Aberdeen Country Club, a 27-hole Tom Jackson design that has earned 4 stars from Golf Digest’s Best Places to Play Guide, continues to deliver value and variety on the North Strand.
  • The Grand Strand’s only Gary Player design, Blackmoor Golf Club is a favorite of locals and visitors alike. Set on land that was once home to a thriving rice plantation, Blackmoor combines lowcountry charm and Player’s creativity to deliver a memorable round of golf.
  • Heather Glen was nominated for Best New Course in America upon its opening and the layout, which has expanded to 27 holes, is as popular now as it was on opening day. Heather Glen has a links feel, complete with the Devil’s Mistress, Myrtle Beach’s most feared pot bunker.
  • The Heathland Course at Legends Resort, which is ranked among South Carolina’s top 20 public layouts, was one of famed architect Tom Doak’s first designs. With wide fairways and enormous greens, Heathland remains among the area’s best courses.
  • The Moorland Course at Legends Resort is a P.B. Dye layout that has stood out from the moment it opened. The course, which was ranked the 37th toughest course in America by Golf Digest, tantalizes players with broad fairways and some of the largest greens in the region. Moorland is also home to Hell’s Half Acre, otherwise known as the 16th hole, which is among best short par 4s in the state.
  • Tidewater Golf Club remains one of the best Myrtle Beach golf coursesTidewater Golf Club, with stunning views of Cherry Grove, the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean, opened to enormous acclaim, becoming the first layout to earn best new course in America honors from Golf Magazine and Golf Digest. The top 100-caliber course remains among the nation’s best.
  • The Willard Byrd Course became the second layout to open at Sea Trail in 1990. With a lack of forced carries and a player-friendly design, the 4-star Byrd Course, featuring generous fairways, provides the ideal combination of value and challenge.
  • Indigo Creek was the eighth Myrtle Beach golf course to open in 1990.
