Five Things You Need to Know About Heather Glen

Avoide the pot bunkers at Heather Glen to score well

While course regulars are familiar with the layout, here are five things you need to know about Heather Glen:

1. Upon its opening in 1987, Heather Glen was named Best New Public Course in America by Golf Digest. The Red and White nines were the two that secured the prestigious honor, but the Blue nine, which opened in 1990, is every bit their equal. Golf Digest has also ranked Heather Glen among the top 50 public courses in the nation.

2. The key to success at Heather Glen? Avoid the pot bunkers. You would rather eat a plate of haggis than end up in one these Scottish score killers. In particular, avoid the Devil’s Mistress, a graveyard that doubles as a pot bunker on the par 3 fourth hole on the White course.

3. A trip to Heather Glen is all about golf. Condos are visible on one hole but otherwise, it’s just you and the course. The serenity and natural beauty add considerably to the course’s charm. From the first tee to the 19th hole, the course is a Myrtle Beach golf vacation classic.

4. One thing players can expect is a strong finish to each nine. The best holes on each course come at the end. The ninth holes on the Red and White, in particular, are very strong. Don’t lose concentration down the stretch or you will pay.

5. Every player at Heather Glen will receive a free yardage book – read it. The course isn’t exceptionally tight but water dissects several fairways, and there are risk/reward decisions to be made. Knowledge is a valuable commodity at this Myrtle Beach golf favorite so take full advantage of what you are given.
