Heathland Brings a Taste of the Old Country to Myrtle Beach

March 26, 2012

Heathland is a Myrtle Beach golf favoriteThe Heathland Course at Legends Resort is smack in the middle of Myrtle Beach, but it’s easy to see why visitors have visions of the other side of the Atlantic Ocean.

Heathland, a Myrtle Beach golf favorite, is one of three very different courses at Legends Resort off Highway 501. The course opened in 1991 with a links feel, including miles of panoramic views, taxing winds, pot bunkers and tall, wiry heather grass interspersed throughout this 6,800-yard layout.

The “old country’’ openness created first by Mother Nature and later architect Tom Doak can easily remind golfers  of what it’s like to play the Old Course at St. Andrews.

Players may not glance at first a winding creek on the par-5 13th or see all the bunkers guarding the demanding, par-4 18th. Bottomless pot bunkers are sprinkled throughout. Massive bunkers, too, like the menacing one protecting the left portion of the 16th green, part of an interesting par-4 with a double fairway.

Golf is serious stuff on the British Isle. It’s serious at Heathland and Legends, too. Moreover, this is also home to the Parkland and Moorland courses.  The trio of Legends courses has earned lofty 4 ½-star ratings in Golf Digest’s “Best Places to Play.” When it opened, Heathland was awarded a Top 10 New Course accolade by Golf Magazine.  And, in 2008 and 2009 Zagat Survey selected Heathland to its Best Places to Play in America.

There is also the immense clubhouse and pub to induce you to relax before and after the round. There are cozy accommodations on-site where, if you like, you can arrive and stay at the Legends during your entire Myrtle Beach golf vacation. Last, but not least, is a state-of-the-art practice facility lit for nighttime workouts.

Heathland’s distinctive Scottish Links appeal appears as if it belongs outside the United States. Good news is it’s a part of the Myrtle Beach golf family and an easier opportunity to experience.
