Myrtle Beach Golf Buzz Goes to Legends Resort

April 25, 2012

The Myrtle Beach Golf Buzz visits The Legends Golf Resort The Legends Resort of Myrtle Beach, SC has been one of the pillars of Myrtle Beach golf for many years. A self-contained golf oasis, it boasts three 18-hole courses, a 35-acre, lighted practice range and an acre-and-a-half putting green. Not to mention the Scottish style clubhouse that dominates the landscape. In this edition of The Myrtle Beach Golf Buzz, Blair O'Neal visits the facility, and finds out the real history of this Myrtle Beach tradition.

Hi, I’m Blair O’Neal, host of the Myrtle Beach Golf Buzz. Today I’m here with Matt Biddington, head golf professional at Legends Resort.

Matt, there are three different courses here; can you walk me through each of them and their styles?

Matt: Three different championship courses, each of them 4.5 stars, according to Golf Digest. Start off with Heathland; it’s definitely the most forgiving of the three courses. It’s a links style golf course designed by Tom Doak. It’s a par 71.

Moorland was ranked the 37th most difficult course in America by Golf Digest. So it’s a little more challenging. It’s a P.B. Dye design with a lot of elevated greens and it’s very scenic out there.

Parkland opened a year after that. It’s a traditional style course with tree-lined fairways.

In addition to the three courses we have on-site, we also have a 35-acre, lit practice range and an acre-and-a-half putting green.

Blair: Can you tell me one of the toughest holes out here?

Matt: It would be on the Moorland Course, the 16th Hole. It’s called Hell’s Half-Acre. It’s a driveable par 4, but if you don’t hit the green, that’s where the Hell’s Half-Acre part comes in. There are lot of waste areas and small pot bunkers. It’s a very difficult hole.

Blair: So, you get your par and get out of there?!

Matt: Par is a good score there.

Blair: So what are some of the events hosted at Legends?

Matt: We host about 40 or 50 tournaments a year, the most prominent one being the World Amateur, which is sponsored by Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday. We have the National Father-Son each year as well.

Blair: How do we go about booking a tee time.

Matt: Go online to LegendsResort.com?

Blair: This is Blair O’Neal with Myrtle Beach Golf Buzz.
