Myrtle Beach Golf Hole of the Week: There is a Sly Fox at River Oaks

June 26, 2017

The third hole on the Fox Course at River Oaks is one of the facility's best River Oaks has installed new cart paths, renovated bunkers throughout the property, installed a new practice putting green, removed 4,000 pine trees to improve conditioning and playability, rebuilt the irrigation system, and installed Champion Bermuda grass greens, among other enhancements.

The work earned River Oaks, home of the Fox, Bear and Otter nines, Myrtle Beach Area Golf Course of the Year Honors in 2015, and the commitment to providing golfers a value-filled experience has continued in the ensuing years.

While River Oaks has made great strides, our Myrtle Beach Golf Hole of the Week earned its designation in part because of a feature that has remained unchanged.

Fox Course – No. 3
Par:
3
Yardage: 189 yards (back tees), 161 yards (middle tees), 140 yards (white tees), 117 yards (gold tees)
Handicap: 5

The Intracoastal Waterway serves as a backdrop for the third hole on the Fox course, pairing natural beauty with excellent design work. The waterway doesn’t come into play but waste and sand bunkers do on a tee shot that is 161 yards from the middle tees and plays to an elevated green.

There is a bunker stationed directly in front of the putting surface and one flanking the back right quadrant. Errant tee shots that avoid the sand will be funneled away from the green, leaving a chip up to a green that runs from front to back. Miss the green and a dicey up-and-down almost surely awaits.

This is a pretty hole, starting with the view from the tee, extending to your drive away from the green, which takes players alongside the Intracoastal Waterway, but it’s a not an easy one. Most players will need a middle iron to reach a putting surface that is fair but does its part to protect par.

Let us know how you did if you’ve played River Oaks.
