Sandpiper Bay Renovates Piper Course, Keeps Improving

February 4, 2016

The popular North Strand facility launched another enhancement project in August 2015, closing the Piper Course to repave the cart paths and remove 250 trees that impacted sunlight and turf growth (the Piper nine reopened in mid-September).

The work at the course extended beyond the Piper nine as the bunkers on all 27 holes were rejuvenated or renovated. Every remaining bunker on the property received new drainage and sand (some were removed), while others, such as the 60-yard bunker on the third hole on the Bay nine, were refashioned.

The third hole bunker, long one of Sandpiper’s most feared hazards, was divided into two bunkers separated by a chipping area.

Sandpiper also purchased a new irrigation pump that has improved grass conditions throughout the property.

The changes were made with you, the golfer, in mind.

“All of the work was done to make the course more playable and more enjoyable for guests,” General Manager Tim Tilma said.

Sandpiper also enhanced the course’s aesthetics, installing cord grass on lake banks, which will help prevent erosion, and it gave the clubhouse exterior a facelift.

The 2010 Myrtle Beach Area Golf Course of the Year, Sandpiper has long made improving the facility a priority. The Sand course underwent a renovation in 2008 and Sandpiper gradually installed new MiniVerde greens between 2008-2010, allowing the facility to always have 18 holes open.

One of the key’s to Sandpiper’s success has been its willingness to upgrade the course before issues develop. That commitment is a testament to management’s vision and the work of new superintendent Jon Stewart (yes, that is his real name, and no, he isn’t related to the comedian!), who has seamlessly carried on the work of the late Jay Varallo, who set the standard at Sandpiper for 15 years.
