Farmstead Much More Than a 767-Yard Hole

A trip is often defined by the most vivid memories it creates, and Farmstead Golf Links, home to the area’s ultimate “go big or go home” challenge, provides an experience you won’t forget.

The massive par-6 18th hole (pictured above) gives Farmstead a seat at the table beside some of the Myrtle Beach area’s other signature challenges. The course’s closing hole plays 767 yards from the tips (it’s “only” 679 yards from the white tees) and is so big one state can’t contain it.

Players tee off in South Carolina and putt out in North Carolina on one of the Grand Strand’s most memorable finishing holes. Mercifully, the fairway is enormous, particularly off the tee shot, before water comes into play and the landing area narrows the closer you get to the green.

Despite its length, No. 18 is eminently fair and most players find it reachable in “regulation,” which is four shots. While the 18th is the hole you will look forward to playing all day, a strange thing will happen on your way around the course.

Golfers quickly come to realize Farmstead is so much more than a single hole (even if No. 18 was named one of America’s 18 most fun holes by Golf Digest). The Willard Byrd design, which has a linksy feel, features generous fairways framed by wispy grass and it is consistently among the North Strand’s best conditioned courses.

Housing is nearly non-existent on the par 72 layout – it has three par 5s and five par 3s – and the tone for the round is set on No. 1, a 367-yard (all distances from white tees) par 4 regarded as one of the course’s best holes. A generous fairway surrounded by water on the right and a fairway bunker, provide a scenic start.

The par-4 9th Hole at Farmstead Golf Links

By the time players get to the par-5 ninth hole (pictured here), which plays 461 yards and offers a chance to reach the green in two, the understanding that they are playing one of Myrtle Beach’s most underrated courses has taken hold.
